There are many materials that suit a crossbow; some of the most used ones are glass fiber, steel and the good-old wood. But all of them have their own advantages and disadvantages, but the most used material for crossbows is spring steel. Spring steel is used by most companies to make their crossbows and it is recommended that you also use the same material for your homemade crossbow. Spring steel is comparatively cheap compared to other, is readily available and practically, is indestructible; it will only break because of faulty design. Spring steel also is easy to bend, which makes it very easy to build your hand crossbow in your preferred shape and size. But it is not all good; there are also some disadvantages in using spring steel for your crossbow. The first is that spring steel is not the same as found in the good old days, you can easily be conned into buying cheap quality and easily damaged spring steel. Another disadvantage is the heavy weight of spring steel; in fact that is the biggest disadvantage in hunting. Anywhere, that’s about it for the disadvantage part…
But some precautions have to also be taken (as usual), when heating the metal, keep in mind that the metal is not overheated. Because, if overheated, the overheated place will become soft and might break in the middle of the hunt, with a bear in front of you…and that would be nasty. The average temperature to heat spring steel is 470 degrees Celsius. And this is the temperature where it should be heated. Also, before doing anything it would be wise to take some crossbow design ideas from the internet, so that you can see which one is strong and suits you better. If you are adventurous, then you can check out other materials too, such as other metals, fibrous materials and wood of different types.
